8 Driving Safety Tips That Could Save Your Life

Keeping safe while driving should be one of your top priorities when you hop into your car. You should also be aware of your cars conditions such as making sure your brakes and tyres are working efficiently. Here are a few invaluable safety tips.

8 Driving safety tips that could save your life:

1. Make sure to increase your following distance in wet conditions

When it rains, make sure to increase your following distance, so that if the car in front of you needs to stop in a hurry, you will be less likely to hit the back of their car. As it’s harder to stop quickly and safely in the rain.

2. Never touch your smartphone when you’re driving

Even if your friends and family members are guilty of sending text messages or checking their social media feeds when they’re driving, in order to keep yourself and your passengers safe, it pays to put your phone away in your glove box, when you’re driving from a to b.

If you think that you can safely check your smartphone in traffic or when you’re stopped at a set of traffic lights, think again. If you must check your smartphone, make sure to pull over and stop in a safe place.

3. Ensure that you remain up to date with the latest road rules

Contrary to popular belief, road rules are updated and changed over the years and it’s important to ensure that you keep up to date with the latest road rules, in order to avoid being involved in a car accident or being given a ticket.

4. Avoid driving when you’re tired

While it may be tempting to keep driving while you’re tired, especially if you’re on a road trip, if you value your life, it’s a wise idea to find a safe spot to pull over for a nap or to find accommodation nearby to sleep in, till the morning.

Remember that the more tired you are, when you drive, the harder you’ll find it to make wise decisions behind the wheel of your car. As an example, if you’re forced to make a split second decision when you’re exhausted, you may be unable to make the right decision in such a short period of time.

5. Never drink and drive

Not only is drinking and driving a criminal offense but drinking alcoholic beverages impairs your judgment and your decision making processes, which makes drinking and driving just as dangerous as driving when you’re exhausted.

6. Make sure that you’re a clear, predictable driver

If you avoid making sudden stops or last-minute moves, other drivers will be able to accurately predict your movements, which will drastically decrease your chances of being involved in an accident.

7. Don’t assume that other drivers will drive as carefully as you do

One critical mistake that many drivers make is assuming that other drivers will drive clearly and safely and will adhere to common road rules. Instead, be prepared for any situation and be ready to make sudden judgments, in order to keep yourself self.

8. Use your headlights in the fog and heavy rain

While it’s obvious that you should drive with your headlights turned on at night, it’s also a great idea to use your headlights in the fog or heavy rain, when your line of sight may be limited.

If you make sure to take the advice listed above to heart, you’ll give yourself a better chance of keeping safe, when you step behind the driver’s wheel.
