How to Create French Braids

French braiding is an elegant, understated style that’s equally at home either at an incredibly fancy event or at a tennis court. No matter where you’re planning to wear this style, the process is actually surprisingly simple, and a guide to French braids is very simple to follow. You just need to know how the process works. Here’s how you can create French braids in your own hair.

1. Part and Gather Your Sections

First, you’ll need to prepare for the braid by parting the hair and gathering your sections. If you’re planning to make two braids, you’ll want to make a part down the center of the hair. Then, gather three sections of equal thickness from the front of the hair, near the front of the head. The most important thing to ensure here is that your sections are even, as it’ll make the whole style look more put-together.

2. Braid, Adding Strands for an Even Thickness

French braids are exactly like normal braids; the only difference is that every so often, you’re adding more of the hair into the braid. Braid the hair close to the head, keeping the strands of hair taut, and add a little bit more hair from either side every few plaits. The tighter you keep the braids, the better your braids will look at the end of the process.

3. Tie Off the Braid

Once you’ve gotten all the hair into your braid, you’ll simply braid the rest like you would any other braid. Then, you need to tie it off at the end. If you really like the tight, taut style, keep the hair taut and bring your hands closer to the braid. If you want it to look a bit looser, bring your hands a bit further away from the braid and allow the braid to sit with a bit more slack.

4. Secure Flyaways

One of the interesting elements of French braids is the braid’s unique sleekness. If you want to make sure you’re maintaining that sleekness, it’s important that you secure the flyaways before you’re done with the style. Take a bit of styling gel, then go over the braid and make sure you’ve smoothed down any flyaways and kept them close to the head. Many people also use styling gel generally over the braid to create a super-sleek look.

Conclusion

French braids aren’t complicated, but they can look incredibly elegant when they’re done. If you’ve ever wanted to create this look for yourself or a friend, you may have wondered how people are able to make the braid look so unique and elegant. These four steps are what create just about every French braid out there. If you want to make sure that your braid looks and feels incredible, just stick to these four steps. You’ll be able to get a style that you’re really happy with, especially if you’re able to practice a little bit and nail down the process of the French braid.
